It’s the weekend of Amsterdam’s marathon yo! Known as one of the world’s fastest marathons due to it’s flat course, Amsterdam is a must run destination for many; especially those who love to run to travel…ahem us! Not only is Amsterdam great for PBs and it’s a scenic run route, it is also great for FOOD. Post run, pre run, we just love to discover and eat! After a few trips to Dam this year, we have built quite a weighty combined list of great places to eat. Here, we break down to our top 5!

Winkel 43 - Noordermarkt 43, 1015 NA Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Let’s start off sweet. APPLE PIE. I bloody love a good apple pie, and Winkle’s is the best I’ve ever tasted. Hands down! Amsterdam is famous for their apple pies, and I’ve had a fair few in local cafés but nothing beats the one that comes out of Winkle’s magical oven! It’s generous in portion and has the flakiest, sweetest, and butteriest pastry. The sweet pastry is balanced out with the large chunks of apple, which aren’t too sweet or sour. Served with a little bit of cream, it’s is perfect for a post-race treat (or any excuse for a treat!). Gah, even typing about it is making my mouth water.

Café de Klos - Kerkstraat 41-43, 1017 GB Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Protein baby! Because we all know we need that protein to keep us werking those miles. At first glance, it just looks like your typical dark and dingy pub, but don’t let appearances put you off. Café de Klos is one of the best meat spots I’ve ever been to. The ambience of the pub and the cheeky waiters all add to the charm of Café de Klos, with the food topping the scale. We ordered the mix rib platter – original and smoked – and the lamb shoulder, which we would highly recommend; the meat just falls off the bone! Don’t come here expecting beautifully presented food, everything is just pilled up and dumped on a wooden platter. I mean, when food tastes this good, who needs it to instagram-able?

Cafe de Klos

Bakers & Roasters - Eerste Jacob van Campenstraat 54, 1072 BH Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Located in the trendy area of ‘Pijp’, this New Zealand style café has nothing Dutch about it, maybe apart from the waiters! This was one of my favourite brunch joints, a great recommendation from our homie Sani from Girl on Kicks. Not only do they serve great coffees and juices, they have a wide range of yummy egg dishes too. Nothing too outrageous, their eggs are either your usual brunch selection or ones with a New Zealand or Brazilian twist!

Bakers & Roasters

Banketbakkerij van der Linde - Nieuwendijk 183, 1012 MG Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Everyone loves a cheeky McDonald's creamy white ice cream, there's just something about it that's so tasty. Now, imagine that but ten times better! I stumbled on this place while shopping; I knew it was good because every time I walked past there was a huge queue. I obvs had to try it and wow, no regrets! This place has the most amazing fluffy creamy ice cream ever! The only choice you make inside is the size of your cone or whether you want it as an ice cream sandwich - the only flavour is vanilla. If you’ve perfected something why change the flavour? This ice cream is really special. Even the way they scoop it out is special...it looks like frozen blended marshmallow. Go large, you'll thank me later!

Hotel de Goudfazant - Aambeeldstraat 10H Waterfront and North Amsterdam.

I love this place so much! Based on the IJ waterfront, just north of Amsterdam, Hotel de Goudfazant is tucked between some industrial buildings and next door to a rock-climbing centre - not exactly prime location for a classy restaurant, but it works! The refurbished warehouse is now a massive open spaced restaurant with rows of tables full of diners ready to tuck into their French / modern European dishes. This spot doesn’t only serve tasty ass food, it also has an effortlessly cool vibe about it which reminds me of an old car garage – just behind the dining area, there are ramps with vintage cars on display. Defo a place to visit if you’re looking for a fancier restaurant without breaking the bank!
