Lisbon food - PortugEATS!
As you may already know, we love to travel and most of all we love to EAT. So wherever we travel to in the world there is no doubt that we go with a comprehensive list of MUST EATS! One of my friends got hitched in the beautiful city of Lisbon so obviously I did my research and found all the go to Lisbon eateries and my oh my do they know how to cook food there! It's been a while since I've been and I was feeling mega guilty for not doing a post on where to eat in Lisbon so here it is for you lucky people. My not so comprehensive but amazingly mouth watering list of PortugEATS in Lisbon (there must be someone who rates my word play here?!).
The world famous Portuguese Pasteis de Nata (i.e. custard tart). Your trip to Lisbon is not complete without taking a day trip to Belém to get yourself one of these babes. The best you can find! These particular ones are so good they have their own name – Pastéis de Belém, named after the area they are from. Go line up and get them fresh out of the oven. Sprinkle cinnamon and icing sugar on top for some extra spice!
Seafood bliss! Get the garlic clams, order double, indulge in oysters and get the tiger prawns. Be prepared to queue – it’s worth it! But this has become a bit of a hot spot in recent times, there are tourists galore so if the queue is really long some of their competitors are just as good!
Travesseiros, the lightest pillow pastries filled with a sweet egg and almond filling. My good friend Alex Taveres introduced me to these and just told me their called pillow pastries. I soon realised that they are in fact disappearing pillow pastries when I am around them! If you go to Sintra you must get this with a coffee and then get a box to take home with you. You won’t regret it!
I adore this place and make sure I visit every time I come to Lisbon. Authentic Portuguese food in small plates. It’s tiny but they have enough space to have you and a group of friends, and you are going to want to go with friends because you need to order EVERYTHING on the menu! Go at off peak times or they might not be able to have you!
Some of the best ice cream I’ve had… ever! Every time I’ve come to Lisbon it’s been out of the way for me to get to Nannarella but that hasn’t ever stopped me. This is premium ice cream! They offer a wide range of delicious flavours – I could have it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I’m kind of glad this is all the way in Lisbon because if it was here in London I would have it all the time and slowly turn into a Nannarella ice cream. They also top it with cold whipped cream – I guess to make it easier for you to smash your face into!
If Nannarella is too far for you (trust me it’s not) then Santini is a good back up plan. But it does not compare to Nannarella!
Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau
I don’t expect everyone to be a fan of this but I definitely am! It’s a codfish cake filled with cheese (!) Estrella Cheese. So bloody good, I haven’t had anything like it before. Kind of like Lisbon’s answer to a Chicken Kiev, but premium and not chicken!
Bola de Berlim! I haven’t got anywhere specific I can tell you to get this but when you see them buy them! They normally sell them on the beach, a sugar party in your mouth that you won’t regret!
Once you’ve had Pasteis De Belem you’re going to need your daily local fix. This is where Manteigaria comes in and provides freshly baked Pasteis de Nata daily. Nearly as good and saves you the journey to Belem. Some even dare to say it is better! You decide!
